Vietnam War

Before the novel begins, Walter Dean Myers includes a short dedication page, which states
"To my brother, Thomas Wayne "Sonny" Myers, whose dream of adding beauty to this world through his humanity and art ended in Vietnam on May 7, 1968"
Walter Dean Myers wrote this novel as a social commentary on, and dedication to, all the young soldiers whose lives were lost in Vietnam.  The experience he had of his brother dying during the war is an experience that was shared by many families, both American and Vietnamese.  He allows the reader to see the waste that comes with sending young individuals to a war with no clear purpose.  This book is not only a dedication to these soldiers, but a warning to future generations of Americans who comtemplate sending people into war.
